Yasmin is an oral contraceptive pill used by women to prevent pregnancy. It contains a combined formulation of hormones, estradiol and drospirenone, which work together to stop an egg being released from the ovaries. Yasmin thickens cervical mucus which prevent sperm from reaching an egg, and also changes the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation. How to take Yasmin?
Yasmin should be taken consistently at the same time each day for 21 days. After 21 days, you are required to take a 7 day pill free break where you may experience some withdrawal bleeding. If you accidentally miss a pill, this can reduce the effectiveness of the birth control and put you at risk of becoming pregnant. During the first few months whilst your body is adjusting to the medication, you may experience breakthrough bleeding. This is completely normal, however, if it becomes heavy or persistent, stop using the medication and seek medical advice as soon as possible.
What are the side effects?
Like with all medication, Yasmin can cause side effects, however, not everyone’s experience is the same. Here are some of the most common side effects you may experience when taking Yasmin:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Breast tenderness
- Headaches
- Mood changes
- Weight gain
- Loss of libido
Some women may also experience changes to their menstrual cycle, as well as tiredness and irritability. Yasmin can in some cases cause sever side effects. IF you experience anything unusual when taking hormonal contraception, seek medical assistance immediately.
