Slynd Contraception - What is it?
Slynd is a progesterone only contraception which can be used to protect against pregnancy. This birth control pill is an effective option for women who are unable to take the combined pill. Slynd contains drospirenone, which is a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone. Slynd works by thickening the mucus around the cervix to prevent sperm from reaching the womb and fertilising an egg.
This pill provides an effective contraception method for women who are unable to take oestrogen. It may also be suitable for women after childbirth, as well as those who are breastfeeding. However, always check with a healthcare professional to ensure it is suitable for you.

How do I take Slynd?
Slynd contains 28 tablets per pack. Each strip has 24 tablets which are active and 4 that are inactive tablets. These are often colour coded white and green so you can differentiate between the active and placebo pills. The pills should be taken at the same time each day and in the correct order as shown on the strip. Once you have finished a pack, a new strip should be started straight away to ensure effectiveness. Whist you take the 4 placebo pills, it is normal to experience light bleeding during this time, and you should continue to take the pills as normal.
If you miss a tablet within 24 hours, you can take the missed one as soon as you remember. This will not affect the contraception if you take it within 24 hours. If you do happen to miss a pill, you should always use additional protection during sexual intercourse to avoid unwanted pregnancy.

What are the benefits of taking Slynd?
As well as being an effective contraceptive method, Slynd can also provide other benefits to women. Slynd contains Drospirenone which can help reduce skin issues such as ache, excessive hair growth and even bloating in some women. Slynd is oestrogen free which makes it suitable for women who have high blood pressure and a history of blood clotting.
Are there any risks of taking Slynd?
As with many medications, side effects re common as well as some risks of taking the medication. Slynd contains Drospirenone which can increase the potassium levels in your body. Therefore, it is not suitable if you have liver or kidney disease, which can increase your risk of heart problems. High potassium levels in your blood is known as a medical condition called Hyperkalemia. This can cause side effects such as:
- Irregular heartbeats
- Nausea
- Weakness in limbs
- Chest pains
- Shortness of breath
Although these are some of the more serious side effects, most people may only experience mild side effects whilst taking Slynd. These could be headaches, acne, breast tenderness, loss of libido and irregular bleeding
