How does Rigevidon work?

Rigevidon works in different ways to help prevent unwanted pregnancy. The pills work by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg each month and thicken the mucus in the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to fertilise an egg.

How to take Rigevidon

A blister strip of Rigevidon contains 21 pills, which need to be taken consecutively at the same time each day to remain effective. You take one pill per day for 21 days, and then follow this up by taking a 7 day break. During these 7 days you may notice some breakthrough bleeding which is completely normal. You may also take a pack back to back to avoid any bleeding as long as you take the medication correctly.

You can start Rigevidon at any time during your menstrual cycle. However, it is best to start taking the medication within the first 5 days of your period. This ensures that you are protected against pregnancy immediately. If you start the medication another time in your cycle, you should use additional contraception for 7 days alongside this, such as condoms.

What are the side effects

All medications come with risks of side effects, including Rigevidon. Most women may experience these side effects during the first few months of taking the pills. Here are some of the most common side effects:

• Headaches
• Nausea
• Breast tenderness,
• Mood changes
• Spotting between periods
• Increased blood pressure.

Although these side effects are common, these symptoms do ease over time. However, if they do become persistent then you may need to change the type of contraception you use.

Can anyone take Rigevidon

Rigevidon is not suitable for all women due to many different factors. Here are some of the most common reasons as to why you cannot take Rigevidon:

• Smokers
• Over the age of 35
• A history of blood clots
• Heart disease
• Liver issues
• Breast cancer

There are also some medicines which can reduce the effectiveness of Rigevidon. Medications for HIV, epilepsy and even antibiotics can affect how the contraception works.
