How to take Marvelon

Marvelon should be taken at the same time, everyday consecutively for 21 days. Once the 21 days are complete at then end of the pack, you would take a 7 day break where you don’t need to take any pills. During these 7 days, you will most likely experience withdrawal bleeding, which is similar to a period. Once the 7 day pill free break has ended, a new pack of pills should be started immediately. As long as these pills have been taken correctly, they will remain effective in protection against unwanted pregnancy.

What can Marvelon be used for?

Marvelon is generally used as a birth control pill, however, this can also be prescribed to help with menstrual and hormonal issues. These pills can help make heavy and painful periods, become light and manageable. They have also been reported to help with PMS and even acne. This is mostly due to the combined hormone balance provided by the pill.

Are there any risks and side effects?

Marvelon, as well as any other medication can cause side effects. Here are some of the more common side effects you may experience whilst taking Marvelon:

• Headaches
• Nausea
• Breast tenderness
• Mood changes
• Loss of libido

As well as the above side effects, some women may also experience spotting or irregular bleeding during the first few months of taking Marvelon. Most of these side effects tend to be temporary and often improve through continued use. If you do notice that your symptoms become persistent or worsen over time, then you should seek advice as soon as possible.

Combined hormonal contraceptive pills are generally safe to use for most women. However, they may not be suitable for everyone. Before we prescribe your contraceptive pills, we will assess your medical history to ensure Marvelon is safe for you to take. These pills are not recommended for women over the age of 35 and smoke. This is due to the increased risk in developing blood clots and cardiovascular issues through use of the combined pills.
