EllaOne Contraception

Using EllaOne Safely and Effectively

EllaOne is a widely used hormonal contraception which can help with preventing pregnancy following unprotected sex. This contraceptive option is considered safe and effective for most women who are looking to prevent unplanned pregnancy following unprotected sex or even failure of another contraceptive method. EllaOne should not be used as a replacement for regular contraception because as this is less effective than most common options such as the pill, hormonal implant, or an IUD. It is recommended to continue using your regular contraception option following the use of EllaOne. It is advisable to take a pregnancy test as soon as possible if your period is more than seven days late from taking the medication.

Who can take EllaOne?

EllaOne is generally a safe medication for many women over the age of 16. Some women who are younger than 16 may also take it under the supervision of a doctor. However, like all medications, it may not be suitable for some women. Here are some reasons EllaOne may not be suitable:

  • Are being treated with steroid medication for asthma
  • Have existing liver complications
  • Are allergic to ingredients such as ulipristal acetate
  • Are already pregnant

Possible and common side effects of EllaOne?

Like most medications, EllaOne can also cause some common side effects in women, however, not everyone will experience them. Some of the most possible and common side effects include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Changes to menstrual cycle

Although less common, some women may also experience other side effects such as vomiting, irritability, mood swings and sore breasts. However, if you have been sick within three hours of taking the EllaOne, you may need to take another dose to ensure its effectiveness. There is a slight risk of developing ovarian cysts whilst taking EllaOne. These are generally harmless and often resolve on their or own without the need for any medical treatment. Although rare, EllaOne may in some cases cause an allergic reaction. How does EllaOne work?

EllaOne is a hormonal contraception which contains the active ingredient ulipristal acetate. This medication works by preventing or delaying ovulation, which means an egg does not get released or fertilised. EllaOne is commonly known as the morning after pill. However, this can actually be taken up to five days after having unprotected sex. Like most medications, the sooner you take it, the more effective it will be. EllaOne only works to help protect against pregnancies and should not be confused with other medications to end a pregnancy.
