Gedarel is a combined oral birth control pill which is used to help prevent pregnancy. These pills are up to 99% effective when taken correctly, making it a reliable form of contraception for women. Gedarel is made up of the synthetic version of the hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. These combined hormones work to stop ovulation and thicken the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from fertilising an egg.

How to take Gedarel
Gedarel comes in a pack of 21 pills per strip. The pills are required to be taken for 21 consecutive days, at the same time each day. Once the 21 pills have been taken, you are required to take a 7 day pill free break. During this break, you may experience breakthrough bleeding which is similar to having a period. This bleeding is completely normal as it is a withdrawal from taking the pills. Once the 7 days are complete, you should start the next pack straight away to ensure effective protection from pregnancy continues.

Many women find that the combined oral pill can help to regulate their periods and make them lighter and less painful. What are the side effects and risks?
Gedarel is generally safe and tolerated well by many women, but like with any medication, you may experience side effects. These side effects are especially common during the first few months of taking the pills. Some of the most common side effects may include:

- Loss of libido
It is also very common for some women to experience spotting or irregular bleeding whilst taking Gedarel. Most symptoms will subside and improve over time.

Combined pills are often not recommended for women over the age of 35 and who smoke. This is because smoking can increase the risk of blood clots, heart attack, or even stroke. If Gedarel is not suitable for you, an alternative form of contraception may be recommended.
