Who can use the NHS Contraception Service

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

This service can be used for women wanting the morning-after pill (Emergency) contraception.

This can be used for up to 120 hours after having unprotected sexual intercourse (UPSI), or after a failed barrier method (condom had split) or when you have missed your contraceptive pill and had unprotected sex.

There are two types of emergency contraception medicines

  1. Ullipristal (Ella One) can be given up to 120 hours after UPSI.  Can be used only once in a menstrual period.  Can interact with other contraceptives and medicines.  No other hormonal contraceptives can be taken within 5 days after taking Ella One.
  2. Levonorgesterel (as levonorgesterel 1500mcg or Levonelle) can be given up to 72 hours after UPSI.  Ideally only can be given once in a menstrual period but there is a chance can be given again in the same menstrual period.

REGULAR CONTRACEPTION

If you are currently taking oral contraception or thinking of starting oral contraception with either a combined pill or progesterone-only pill (often referred to as the mini-pill) we are here to help take the hassle out of obtaining them.

Eligible for women who have a menstrual period from age 17 years of age to the age of 49 years (age of 54 for progesterone-only pill) can use this service.

At this moment in time, we can only provide oral contraception and not the patches, implants or injections.
